Cancer Registration in the Russian Federation

Cancer Registry of St. Petersburg

From the article Abstract -see bellow:
Data concerning incidence and prevalence of cancer in the Soviet Union (USSR) and Russia have traditionally not been provided on a basis that facilitated comparison with data from countries in western parts of Europe. This was due to differences in routines and procedures for reporting, registration and diagnostics, as well as to a lack of information that described the procedures. Today(2005), the cancer registry in St Petersburg is the only regional cancer registration in Russia that has been recognised by the European Network of Cancer Registries to fulfil international standards, but efforts have been made to standardise the system within Russia.” (link to BioMed Central – free full text article)

From the Abstract:
Data concerning incidence and prevalence of cancer in the different regions of Russia have traditionally not been provided on a basis that facilitated comparison with data from countries in western parts of Europe. The oncological hospital in Arkhangelsk, in co-operation with Universitetet i Tromsø (Norway), has established a population based cancer registry for Arkhangelskaja Oblast (AO). AO is an administrative unit with 1.3 million inhabitants in northwestern Russia.
